Tokyo Capsule Hotel Experience Japan 3 days ex Tokyo
If comfort, convenience and a central location is important to you in your accommodation choice, our Capsule Hotel experience might be just the ticket! Perfectly located in Tokyo's Shinjuku region, the hotel and our local orientation is the budget alternative to a more conventional hotel. Of modular design and self-contained, your capsule quickly becomes your home-away-from-home providing a comfortable sleeping place with none of the wasted space of a large expensive room.
We think you'll love this unusual experience and will certainly get the most out of your time in Tokyo, Japan's thriving capital.
Accommodation Detail Uniquely designed to deal with the lack of space in Japan's crowded metropolises, Capsule Hotels originated as a way to cater for the many who missed the last train home or business people who worked long hours in the city and couldn't justify the long commute home each night only to return early the following morning. They are somewhat like a large enclosed bunk bed measuring a relatively spacious 1m x 2m (3.28 X 6.56 feet). Your luggage is stored in a locker elsewhere in the hotel. While many cater to males only we have found one that also accepts female travellers.
Nowadays, Capsule Hotels provide an unusual accommodation experience in the heart of Tokyo that won't break the budget and will be quite the talking point when you return back home. Perfectly situated in Shinjuku, the nightlife and entertainment centre of Japan's bustling capital, our Capsule Hotel accommodation makes a perfect base for your city explorations without having to worry about the last train home (which is usually around midnight). Over 600 well packed capsules make up our popular hotel with services also including a cafeteria, lounge area and TV room. All bath and toilet facilities are shared (gender separated of course) and our hotel features a luxurious spa and sauna area so you can soak and experience a Japanese traditional bath in the midst of modern Tokyo.
We ease you in to this Quirky Accommodation experience by having a local guide on hand to meet you at the bustling Shinjuku station, check you in to the capsule hotel, explain where to put your shoes and stow your big bag. We suggest you have a small overnight bag/daypack to take into the capsule itself. They will also initiate you into the intricacies of staying in a Capsule Hotel... which buttons in your capsule lower your privacy blind versus which ones are for your reading light or TV, where and how to bathe 'Japanese-style' and anything else you need to know.
Location Our capsule hotel is located in Shinjuku, the nightlife and entertainment centre of Japan's bustling capital. Neon lights, skyscrapers and Bladerunner-esque night time scenery surround the world's busiest train station where over 2 million people pass through every day, changing between the multitudes of public transport options which converge here from all over Tokyo to the dormitory suburbs west of Tokyo and to western Japan. As the sun goes down the streets glow with neon and flashing lights and the office workers stop off on their way home for some drinks in the sprawling entertainment area of Kabukicho. Join them for some skewers in yakitori alley, a smoky alleyway hidden between the main road and the train tracks, stop into a tiny bar that fits only 5 people in the Golden Gai, get a bird's eye view over the sprawling metropolis from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Offices or stop in for some bargain shopping at Donki which sells everything from fake nails to rice cookers and is open 24hrs.
All this within walking distance of your conveniently located capsule... how convenient is that?
History of Shinjuku Originating as a collection of inns built by a feudal lord along a highway out of the capital in the early 1700s it became a new 'station' or stopping point on the road (the meaning of the name Shinjuku). The lord lived nearby and what is now Shinjuku Park was his villa, an oasis of greenery and calm in the midst of the bustling city. In the 1923 earthquake which flattened large parks of Tokyo and killed over 100,000 people this area was relatively untouched and the seismically stable area is now home to some of the tallest buildings in Tokyo. After the bombings of WWII there was a kabuki theatre planned and although money ran out the name 'Kabukicho' is still used to refer to the entertainment area northeast of the station and is Japan's largest and wildest red light district.
Shinjuku is one of the 23 wards of Tokyo, but the name commonly refers just to the large entertainment, business and shopping area around Shinjuku Station. It is a major commercial and administrative centre, housing the busiest train station in the world which handles over 2 million passengers per day, a multitude of department stores, subterranean malls and electronic shops.
Get ready to enjoy Shinjuku, a key shopping and nightlife part of Tokyo.
Itinerary Detail Arriving into Tokyo, the world's most populous city with some 35 million residents, is to arrive into a neon-lit mega-city!
To give you an insight into this bustling city and impart some valuable local knowledge, a local guide will meet you at the JR (Japan Rail) Shinjuku station’s east exit and take you to the hotel. On arrival at your Capsule Hotel the guide will help you check in to the accommodation and explain where to stow your shoes the bulk of your luggage (have an overnight bag to take in to your capsule). They will then take you on an evening tour of the surrounding area, give you some dining suggestions and give you maps and information to make the most of your time in Tokyo.
By day you can hop on one of the many train, subway or metro lines that come through Shinjuku and explore further afield. With the world's largest metropolis at your doorstep there's plenty to see!
